Scott Rees
Scott W. Rees III, age 68, of Newark, DE, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 17, 2019.
Born in Wilmington, DE on January 27, 1951, he was the son of the late Scott Wiles Rees, Jr. and Martha Adele (Drendall) Rees. After graduating from William Penn High School, Scott joined the New Castle County Police Department in 1970. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served his country. He was originally assigned as an MP (Military Police) and was later assigned to the CID (Criminal Investigation Division). During his tour of duty, he served in Vietnam for nearly a year. After leaving the military, he returned to his career in law enforcement with the NCCPD, where he served in the patrol and detective divisions, retiring from the department in 1987.
After retiring from the NCCPD he went on to serve as the Chief of Police for the New Castle City Police Department for an additional 10 years. Scott was a talented sketch artist for both the New Castle County Police and New Castle City Police Departments. He also played guitar with the First State Force Band. Scott and his late father, Scott W. Rees Jr., were at one time the only serving father/son Chiefs of Police in the United States.
After retiring as Chief of Police from the New Castle City Police Department, Scott continued his law enforcement career as a Special Deputy with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Scott was a history buff and enjoyed watching the History Channel, National Geographic Channel, Science Channel and of course, watching his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. As an avid fan, he and his brother Rick attended Superbowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, FL and he was thrilled when they won Super Bowl LII. He loved to paint, draw, build and tinker around with gadgets.
He loved his family, adored being a pop-pop, and his fondest memories were made spending time with his family and friends. Scott is survived by his children, Sherry W. Rees of Wilmington, DE, Scott M. Rees of Lakeland, FL and Brandi N. Rees of Berlin, Germany; grandson, Michael J. Rees; brothers, Frederick “Rick” Rees (Donna) of New Castle and Christopher D. Rees Sr. (Karen) of Atlanta, GA.; 5 nieces and nephews; dog, Pooter; and bird, Charlie.
